A subset of individuals with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) may also have bile acid malabsorption (BAM), which can contribute to their symptoms. Due to a lack of standard testing and treatment for patients with BAM in the United States, the American College of Gastroenterology does not suggest the use of bile acid sequestrants to treat patients with IBS-D symptoms and recommends clinician discretion.
