Give Patients a “Breather” Before the Carotid Exam

Examine patients’ carotid arteries immediately after you examine their lungs. It is easier for patients to hold their breath for the carotid examination after they have taken several deep inspirations. This is especially helpful for elderly persons and those with cardiopulmonary disease.
