New Study Estimates Incidence of Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) incidence is higher in women, young adults, and African Americans than in other members of the population, according to the findings of a recent study.
In order to estimate incidence of HS in the United States, researchers conducted a retrospective cohort analysis involving 5410 new HS diagnoses over a 1-year period from a population sample of over 48 million patients.

Overall, 1-year incidence of HS was 11.4 cases per 100,000 in the general population, 16.1 cases per 100,000 in women, 6.8 cases per 100,000 in men, 22 per 100,000 in adults aged 18 to 29 years, 30.6 per 100,000 among African Americans, and 11.7 per 100,000 among whites.
The average annual overall incidence over 10 years was 8.6 per 100,000.
“HS incidence has increased over the past decade and disproportionately involves women, young adults, and African Americans,” the researchers concluded.
