Mortality Risk Is High in Older Ischemic Heart Disease Patients

Nearly a quarter of patients with chronic ischemic cardiovascular disease (CICD) die or are hospitalized within 6 months, according to the results of a recent study.

In the CICD Pilot Registry, researchers sought to describe characteristics, management strategies, and clinical outcomes of CICD using data from 2420 patients across 10 countries.

At 6 months, 2203 patients were analyzed, of which, 58 (2.6%) died after inclusion and 522 (23.7%) experienced all-cause hospitalization or death. Independent predictors of all-cause mortality and hospitalization were age, (hazard ratio [HR] 1.17 per 10 years), and a history of peripheral revascularisation (HR 1.45), chronic kidney disease (HR 1.31) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (HR 1.42).

“The medical management of this condition remains suboptimal, emphasizing the need for larger registries with long-term follow-up,” the researchers concluded. “Ad-hoc programs aimed at implementing guidelines adherence and follow-up procedures are necessary, in order to improve quality of care and patient outcomes.”
