FDA Warns Against Use of Homeopathic Teething Tablets and Gels

Homeopathic teething tablets and gels should not be used because they could lead to seizures in children, the FDA said in a safety statement.

The FDA has currently not evaluated or approved any of the teething products for safety or efficacy, and as a result, recommends that parents stop using and/or dispose of them.

Some of the symptoms a child could experience include seizures, difficulty breathing, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty urinating, or agitation. Parents are advised to seek immediate medical care for their child if he/she experiences any of those symptoms after use of homeopathic teething tablets and gels.

In addition, if health care professionals or parents observe any adverse events related to the teething products, they are urged to contact the FDA MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.

The FDA is in the process of testing product samples and investigating reports of adverse events, and more information will be communicated as it becomes available.
