Does Dairy Intake Influence Risk of Total Hip Arthroplasty?

Dairy intake was associated with an increased risk for total hip arthroplasty in men with osteoarthritis (OsA), according to a recent study.

The prospective cohort study included 38,924 participants involved in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study with records of dairy product consumption from 1990 to 1994. Researchers linked cohort records to the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry to determine incidence of total hip arthroplasty for OsA from 2001 to 2013.

A total of 1505 total hip arthroplasties for OsA were identified during the mean 11.8 years of follow-up. Five hundred and twenty-four of the procedures were performed on men and 981 were performed on women.

For men, dairy product consumption was found to have a dose-dependent relationship with incidence of total hip arthroplasty for OsA. One standard deviation increase in dairy consumption was associated with a 21% increase in incidence of total hip arthroplasty.

These results were independent of age, body mass index, smoking status, country of birth, education, vigorous physical activity levels, calcium supplementation, energy intake, circulating vitamin D levels, hypertension and diabetes.

“Increasing dairy product consumption was associated with an increased risk of total hip arthroplasty for men with [OsA], with no significant association observed for women,” the researchers concluded. “Understanding the mechanisms may help identify strategies to prevent hip [OsA], particularly for men.”
