AARP, GCBH Issue Brain-Healthy Nutrition Recommendations
The Global Council on Brain Health (GCBH) of the American Association of Retired Persons’ (AARP) has released new recommendations regarding the impact of nutrition on brain health among individuals aged 50 years and older.
The council met from September 12 to 13, 2017, and reached consensus on various statements in regard to diet and brain health. The GCBH also addressed gaps in existing knowledge of the association of nutrition with brain health.
Consensus statements issued by the GCBH include:
- Diet affects brain health.
- Diets that promote heart health also promote brain health.
- Long-term healthy eating habits foster good brain health.
- Adopting healthy dietary habits is beneficial at any age.
- The typical, contemporary Western diet is harmful to brain health.
