Bariatric Surgery Significantly Decreases MACE, Mortality in Patients With Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome

Bariatric surgery is associated with a decrease in major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality in patients with obesity and metabolic syndrome long term after surgery, according to results of a new study.

The population-based cohort study, conducted by researchers at McGill University, was presented during the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) 2021 Annual Meeting.

The researchers evaluated all patients with morbid obesity and metabolic syndrome who had undergone bariatric surgery in Quebec, Canada, from 2007 and 2012. Those patients were then compared with a control group with obesity who were matched for age, sex, geography, and comorbidities. Then, the researchers compared the incidence of MACE and all-cause mortality at 5 years between the surgery and the control groups.

A total of 3627 patients undergoing bariatric surgery were included in the analysis and were matched to 5420 controls with obesity. Baseline demographics were similar between the groups, but participants in the surgery group were more likely to have diabetes.

The surgery group  and the control group had a major difference in MACE at 5 years (17% vs %22). There was also a major difference in all-cause mortality between the two groups (2.2% vs 3.9%).

After adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities, bariatric surgery was independently associated with decreased-all cause mortality (HR 0.78 [0.68-0.89]).

“Bariatric surgery is associated with a decrease in MACE and all-cause mortality in obese patients with metabolic syndrome long term after surgery,” the researchers concluded.
