CDC Warns of Multi-State E. coli Outbreak

The CDC have warned of a multi-state outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O103 infections.

The outbreak is also being investigated by the FDA, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, and several states.

Overall, 72 cases have been reported in 5 states (Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia, with Kentucky and Tennessee seeing the most cases). Eight of the cases have led to hospitalization, but no cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome or death have been reported. Those infected are aged 1 to 74 years old.

At the moment, no food item, grocery store, or restaurant have been identified as the source.
