AAAAI/ACAAI Release New Rhinitis Guidance

The AAAAI/ACAAI Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters has released new guidance on the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of allergic (AR) and nonallergic rhinitis (NAR).

The new guidance serves as an update to the group’s 2008 rhinitis guidance. The majority of the recommendations are consensus-based statements based upon a literature review of recent evidence and a list of key clinical questions developed by the group.

Among the updates:

  • Combination use of INCS and INAH in AR and NAR is further supported since the 2008 guidance.
  • Do not use oral decongestants during the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • The section on avoiding first-generation antihistamine use in AR is expanded.
  • Intranasal decongestants should be limited to short-term use except in certain circumstances when used in combination with intranasal decongestant.
  • Sublingual and subcutaneous immunotherapy are effective for the treatment of AR and could help to prevent allergic asthma.
  • Acupuncture and herbal medications do not have adequate evidence to support recommendation.
