Gas Is a Pressing Concern

STEPHEN REPLOGLE, DO

Distinguishing gas from more serious causes of abdominal pain can be done by applying pressure rapidly and then slowly to the abdomen. Pain caused by gas will be reproduced by pushing quickly into the abdomen with the fingertips, whereas slow pressure will allow the gas to move without triggering stretch receptors in the intestine. Both types of pressure will reproduce pain caused by more serious abdominal disorders.
