Tinea Corporis
Common Dermatophyte Infections Tinea Corporis

For 1 year, a 30-year-old man had an intermittent rash that was confined to the area of his jockey shorts; no other part of the body was affected. The patient reported that the pruritic eruption arose and disappeared spontaneously and was more prominent during the heat of summer. A light tan, sharply demarcated patch was noted on the patient’s buttocks. Hyphae were revealed on a potassium hydroxide preparation of a specimen from the area. Tinea corporis, or ringworm, which can manifest on any part of the body, was diagnosed. A regimen of one 200-mg ketoconazole tablet taken daily for 3 weeks resolved the patient’s fungal infection.
