Welcome, Dr Stephen Brunton
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr Brunton to the Editorial Board of CONSULTANT. His 30 years of experience in the development of education for primary care clinicians make him well qualified to serve as one of our key advisors.
Dr Brunton is executive vice president for education for the Primary Care Education Consortium (PCEC) in Charlotte, North Carolina. The PCEC is a collaboration of primary care organizations and associations focused on the development of practical educational projects and interventions for primary care clinicians. He is also part of the faculty at Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency in Concord, North Carolina, where he has his clinical practice, and he holds the faculty rank of adjunct clinical professor in the department of family medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In addition, he has held academic appointments at the University of Southern California, the University of California, Irvine, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and the University of Kansas.
Dr Brunton earned his medical degree at Monash University Medical School in Melbourne, Australia, and served his internship at Alfred Hospital, also in Melbourne. He completed his residency in family practice at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in California.
A former president of the California Academy of Family Physicians and the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors, Dr Brunton has held many positions within the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). He served as director of the division of education in the early 1980s and was a family practice residency director in California for 13 years. Currently a fellow of the AAFP, he is board-certified in family practice, with a certificate of added qualifications in geriatrics.
Throughout his career, Dr Brunton has received many awards, including the Munzer Family Award for Excellence in Local and National Education and Research and the Barbara Harris Memorial Award for Educational Excellence from the California Academy of Family Physicians.
A frequent lecturer, Dr Brunton also has published numerous articles, book chapters, and monographs on family medicine and related clinical topics, including hypertension, diabetes, neuropathic pain, gastroesophageal reflux disease, asthma, and smoking cessation. He serves in editorial capacities for Internal Medicine Alert, Clinical Diabetes, Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, and as a reviewer for American Family Physician, the Southern Medical Journal, and the Journal of Family Practice. Dr Brunton has also served as moderator for Advances in Medicine for the Professional Television Network’s Healthcast Medical News.
We are delighted that Dr Brunton has accepted our invitation to join the other distinguished members of our Editorial Board (whose names appear on page 478). He will play an essential role in making sure we bring you concise, practical, and challenging editorial that can help you in your daily practice.
